I think it is so drivers can see the color and know what the sign is going to be about, like stop sign is red and red means stop. All of the caution related signs are yellow, because yellow on the stoplight is caution too.
I think that they are different colors so that 'uncareful' drivers can see them as they speed by. I agree with Anna with how those who are illiterate can still drive (though I'm not sure how they'd pass their driver's test). Also then those who are losing their sight and can't see things farther away can at least tell the sort of thing they are supposed to do.
I think it's so that we can kind of remember the colors of the sign without actually looking at the words. Another reason may be so that we don't think it's another one if they're the same color.
The signs are different colors so drivers do not assume one sign is another. If a driver said "Oh look a slippery when wet sign" when it is really a stop sign, then CRASH! Also in response to Anna's comment, how can someone not read symbols, or in that matter, how can you even read pictures(or symbols)?
I think it is so that when you are driving fast you can glance at the sign and then see the color and know what it means instead of reading the sign. And it might be from far away you can see the sign or if you have poor vision you can tell what the sign means.

ReplyDeleteI think that they are different colors so they can catch drivers eyes and don't blend in with there surrounding.
ReplyDeleteI think they are so they are easier to identify because they are all unique in their color and shape.

ReplyDeleteSo if you cant read or your discombobble-ated you can remember that a stop sign is a red octogon and a caution sign is a yellow diamond or sqaure.
